What are the food label manufacturing regulations in Australia?
In Australia, food labelling regulations are governed by the Food Standards Code, which is administered by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). The Code sets out specific requirements for the labelling of packaged food products sold in Australia, including requirements for nutrition information, allergen declarations, and country of origin labelling.
Here are some key regulations for food labelling in Australia:
  1. Ingredients List: All ingredients in a packaged food product must be listed in descending order of ingoing weight.
  2. Allergen Declarations: If a food product contains any of the eight major food allergens (fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, or soybeans), they must be declared on the label.
  3. Nutrition Information Panel: A nutrition information panel must be provided on most packaged foods, with the mandatory declaration of energy, protein, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, sugars and sodium.
  4. Country of Origin Labelling: Food products must be labelled with a statement about their country of origin, which includes the place where they were made, grown or packed.
  5. Health and Nutrient Claims: Any health or nutrient content claims made on a food product must comply with strict requirements set out in the Food Standards Code.
  6. Date Marking: All packaged foods must have a use-by or best-before date to indicate the shelf life of the product.
  7. Net Quantity: The net quantity of the product must be declared on the label.
  8. Name and Address: The name and address of the manufacturer, packer, or importer must be declared on the label.
  9. It's worth noting that there may be additional labelling requirements for specific types of food products. It's always a good idea to check the Food Standards Code for the latest requirements before labelling and selling any packaged food product in Australia.
